Catheter extrusion with infection complicating permanent endocardial pacing. An unusual complication reported in three cases.

چکیده
Three cases of erosion and extrusion of a pacemaker catheter with infection are reported. Treatment consisted of removing the infected catheter without delay and administering systemic antibiotics. Local antibiotics did not prevent septicemia and resultant death in one patient. Modiication of our original technique by employing the cephalic vein below the clavicle or implanting the catheter behind the clavicle when the external jugular vein is employed has prevented this complication.

Assessment of endocardial leads for permanent cardiac pacing.
Catheter tip dislocation is the main complication of permanent pacemaker implantation using the subclavian vein. In this study of 50 patients we compared the incidence of complications using two endocardial electrodes specially designed to prevent tip dislocation. One catheter had a helical endocardial electrode and the other had retractable nylon barbs. The helical electrode was superior in ev...
متن کاملPericardial complications of endocardial and epicardial pacing.
A patient with complete atrioventricular block was fitted with a temporary endocardial pacing wire via a right subclavian percutaneous approach. The result was initially satisfactory, but within a few days radiography for left-sided chest pain showed pneumopericardium. A permanent epicardial pacing system was therefore substituted and she remained well for three months. She was then admitted fo...
متن کاملLarge right atrial thrombosis. Rare complication during permanent transvenous endocardial pacing.
Right atrial thrombosis is a rare complication of permanent endocardial pacing. We report two cases with large right atrial thrombi which occurred during permanent endocardial electrical stimulation. Both patients were women, aged 83 and 89 years, who died suddenly, respectively, one month and 24 days after pacemaker implantation. At the time of death the two patients were in severe persistent ...

Myocardial perforation as a complication of permanent endocardial pacing with flexible Elema catheters is described in nine patients. In eight patients pacing failed, but there were no other serious ill-effects. Diaphragmatic pacing occurred in...
متن کاملSpontaneous extrusion of migrated ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter through chest wall: a case report.
Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is the most commonly performed procedure for the management of hydrocephalus. VP shunt related complications remain a persistent problem in clinical practice. However, extrusion of components of shunt apparatus is very rare. Extrusion of ventriculo-peritonea l(VP) shunt catheter is an unusual complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt Surgery. The authors report ...
